So you ordered a take-out or delivery pizza but couldn’t quite finish it off. Some people like to just eat the leftovers later on when it’s cold, but some like to reheat the slices, which is a problem in itself. Microwaves make the pizza floppy and a bit… well, plastic. Here’s the best way to heat them up again! But first, remember to store the pizza away in the fridge. Leaving it at room temperature for more than a couple hours opens up a whole lot of bacteria problems!
Store the pizza stacked up in slices, one on top of the other, putting a piece of kitchen towel between each slice. Wrap the whole thing in silver foil.
Having said all that, I’m usually going to eat the leftover pizza the day after, so I just leave it in the box it came in and put it in the fridge – you’ll be fine for the small amount of hours passed.
Right, let’s heat ’em up again!
- Put a skillet1 on the cooker hob and preheat to medium heat. If it goes to 10, put it on 5. And, be patient! Wait for it to warm up fully.
- Put the pizza slices into the skillet. Immediately pour some cold tap water into your hand and then pour the handful into the corner of the skillet, which will start sizzling almost immediately.
- Cover the skillet. If you don’t have a cover that came with it, use some foil to cover it instead.
- Cook the slices for 6-8 minutes, until the cheese starts to bubble.
Done! Simple as that. The important two things are that you don’t add any margarine or cooking oil – you cook ’em dry, except for the handful of water you add that “steams” the top of the pizza. This gives the base this lovely crispiness again. The second thing is covering the pan – keeping the heat inside the skillet and cooking the top as well as the base.
NOM!
- I say skillet; any kind of frying pan will do though. I use a pan with ridges at the bottom for no particular reason except that it fits half a pizza in at one go. ↩︎
